Contemporary health issues are profoundly influenced by factors outside the traditional realm of health and health care, such as transportation. Health Impact Assessment (HIA) offers a tool to make the health effects of transport policies explicit. However, as health risks are increasingly complex, HIA is faced with several challenges. Due to the intersectoral nature of health risks, the evidence base is often quite thin, while predictions need to be valid and need to provide insight in the distribution of effects across a population.
