Last week, the MOBI Electromobility Research Centre of Vrije Universiteit Brussel was strongly represented at the EPE 2025 Conference, the leading European platform for power electronics and their role in the energy transition. Organised by the EPE Association, the conference brought together researchers, industry leaders and policymakers to exchange the latest developments and applications within the field.
Two Strong Research Contributions
MOBI proudly presented two poster sessions during the event. Robert Alfie S. Peña showcased his work on modelling and evaluating GaN HEMTs for efficient multicell battery balancing using dual-active bridge converters. In parallel, Shahid Jaman introduced his research on a compact, interoperable DC charging station featuring smart charging functionalities for e-bike charging parks. Both projects reflect MOBI’s commitment to pioneering solutions in sustainable mobility and smart energy infrastructure.
Session Chairmanships and Recognition of Expertise
Beyond these research contributions, several MOBI researchers actively participated in the conference programme. Omar Hegazy, Mohamed El Baghdadi and Joeri Van Mierlo each chaired a number of technical sessions — a clear acknowledgement of the team’s expertise and standing within the European research community.
A Reflection on the Future of Power Electronics
A highlight of the conference was a keynote speech by Philippe Lataire, who reflected on the evolution of the field and the indispensable role of power electronics in supporting the ongoing energy transition. His address offered an inspiring close to a week that reaffirmed how crucial developments in power electronics — from advanced battery systems to smart charging solutions — will be in shaping the future of sustainable transport and energy systems.
