VISION AND MISSION
The vision of MERLIN is to create a world in which sustainable light and lighting solutions create an environment where the needs of our digital society, such as energy efficiency, safety and connectivity, are fulfilled, while still maximizing the human comfort.
The mission of MERLIN is to be a key player in the field of innovative light and lighting solutions by connecting fundamental research with applied research and creating cutting-edge technologies and applications for the society of the future.
expertise
MERLIN has research expertise in public lighting (road lighting, tunnel lighting,...) indoor lighting (lighting simulations in Relux & DIALux evo, visual ergonomy, visual environment, domotics, smart lighting, daylighting in buildings,...), medical lighting (visual comfort and surgical luminaires) and the application of lighting in digital communications (visible light communication for V2X, Li-Fi, …)
The team members of MERLIN are actively involved in academic research, university teaching, projects and technical commissions at national and international level. At national level, we are involved in the Belgian institute for Lighting (BIV) and the Bureau for Standardisation (NBN.) At international level, we are involved in the International commission for Lighting (CIE) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN.)
about merlin
MERLIN, founded in 2020, is a young research group which has its roots in the former lighting research group LUXETEC. The aim of MERLIN is to reinvent the concept of lighting and explore new roads in which lighting can improve the quality of living by increasing comfort as well as keep up with the digital transformation. MERLIN tackles several lighting challenges of different nature including discomfort caused by glare, outdoor safety feeling, the effect of light pollution on wildlife, connectivity through lighting (visible light communication), etc.

HER research (Health and Environment Revitalization)
Spatial and attentive perception in resilient Pocket parks
The HER research questions the link between outdoor environment, its perception and its effect on our minds.Environment? Small-scale public spaces, our familiar surroundings, whether residential or for our daily activities.Perception? These are mainly public resting infrastructure and its green natural surroundings, lit in the evening or at night. The effect on our health? The idea is to offer everyone a place and a time in their own familiar environment, with the possibility of choosing the lighting at night.More generally, this research focuses on the link between observation of our daily environment and our cognitive functions: learning, memory, reasoning.
